José Bechara was born in 1957, in the city of Rio de Janeiro where he lives and works. He studied at the EAV Parque Lage – Visual Arts School, located in the same city.

The artist took part in major art shows, among them the 25th Bienal Internacional de São Paulo; the 29th Panorama da Arte Brasileira; the 5th Bienal Internacional do MERCOSUL; and the 2011 Trienal de Arquitetura de Lisboa including the exhibitions "Caminhos do Contemporâneo" e "Os 90" at Brazil`s Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro. Bechara has shown his works in individual and group exhibitions at renowned institutions, among them Brazil`s Fundação Eva Klabin; Portugal`s Culturgest, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa and Museu do Chiado; Spain`s MEIAC-Badajós, Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderna-Valencia, the Museo Patio Herreriano-Valadollid (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Español) and MARCO de Vigo. He also showed his work at Germany`s Haus der Kilturen der Welt; the Ludwig Forum Fur Intl Kunst; the Kunst Museum; at Belgium`s Musee Bozar, and at the ASU Art Museum in the USA. Bechara`s work has travelled to the most relevant institutions in Brazil, among them the MAM-Rio de Janeiro; MAC-Paraná; MAM-Bahia; MAC-Niterói; the Instituto Tomie Ohtake; Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz; Fundação Iberê Camargo; the Museu Vale; Centro Cultural São Paulo; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo to name a few.
